Japan: Vivid, Authentic, Timeless
Japan evokes a unique resonance. For some, it is the delicate elegance of its cuisine; for others, the intricate beauty of its refined art forms. Many are captivated by the bold strokes of manga or the disciplined poetry of martial arts. But for me, it is Japan itself: vivid, authentic, timeless. It stands in striking contrast to Europe, profoundly different, yet never strange, never extreme, never distant. I feel an effortless harmony with it, as if its rhythm has always echoed within me.
A Tapestry of Moments
My 14 images capture Japan’s multifaceted life, blending the expected and the unexpected in a tile-like arrangement that creates an immersive tableau. At the edges, the neon-lit energy of Osaka and Tokyo pulses vividly. Moving inward, the serene temple of Koyasan whispers ancient truths, offering a quiet counterpoint to the cities’ intensity. Nara’s vermilion pillars rise in rhythmic succession, like an eternal chant carved into wood. At the center, Okinawa’s panoramic vista opens as a breath between sky and sea, surrounded by the quiet poetry of daily life. Together, the 7.4-meter composition becomes a visual journey across landscapes, moods, and emotions.
Jazz in Bloom
The series opens with a smaller piece adorned with cherry blossoms, yet it gently defies expectation. Instead of the traditional tranquil spring tableau, it presents a Japanese jazz band heralding the season, their melodies threading through the petals like an unexpected breeze. It is not the usual image associated with cherry blossoms, but for me it captures the fleeting, fragrant essence of the moment with a deeper authenticity. The jazz notes seem to linger in the air, much like the delicate scent of blossoms after they have fallen: ephemeral, yet unforgettable.
